Dignity in Care of Dependent Elderly

Abstract
Aged population in dependent state has increased in our society with increasing life expectance of people. But to provide what kind of medical care to the dependent elderly remains to be as the difficult problems. The dependent elderly has low quality of life and their death is accepted as natural event even if those around one is in sorrow. In circumstances it is difficult to make a good decision for the dependent elderly. Because their autonomy has been limited and there is controversy whether a treatment become benefit or not for them.
This article suggest the dignity as that value that is considered in medicine. Dignity is natural value to respect in life as well as in medicine. But in real practice it is doubted if the dignity of vulnerable patient like dependent elderly is respected. Before discussion about withholding and withdrawing of treatment, we have to be achieved consideration and respect for sense of dignity and intrinsic dignity in care. Sense of dignity in dependent elderly is close connection with meaningful life, self esteem and respect for autonomy. For that, care giver"s attention and respect is needed. Aspect of intrinsic dignity, good relationship between patient and care-giver is important. we need to consider caregivers burden in care and search the way for being lessened their burden.
